In your quest for balance, have you ever explored the Danish concept of Hygge?
In essence, Hygge (pronounced “hoo-gah”) encapsulates a feeling of cosiness, contentment and well-being. It’s about creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying life’s simple pleasures.
Every winter I want to go into hibernation mode. I feel my body and mind slowing down and I just want to curl up in a ball on the sofa and not do very much.
I used to have a lot of negative self-talk around, ‘I hate winter’, ‘I’m not a winter person’, ‘This weather’s foul, in summer, I’ll…’ but I just ended up miserable.
I stumbled across the Hygge philosophy and it was a revelation to me. What if I just accepted the way things are from November to February and go with the flow? What if I looked for things I could enjoy about it? What if I was OK with slowing down? After all, hedgehogs, bears and other animals seem to have got it right, haven’t they?
I gradually started trying out a few Hygge practices and now they’re very much part of my winter life. Now I relish many aspects of winter and look forward to my Hygge rituals.
